Formation of formators: the key issue in formation

The second day of the International Congress for Formators to the Consecrated Life.

Sr Claudia Pena y Lillo presented five models of formation, from the classical Ascetico-Traditional one exalting a certain type of perfection based on rules, common observances and clearly defined relationships between superiors and subjects, to what she called the Integration Model, which seems to me to be largely the one proposed by Cencini, if not a slight variation of it.

The clear declaration: the central point is the FORMATORS, not the formees.

Ricardo Volo also made a presentation in Cencini terms: from Docilitas to Docibilitas, which mean from the Order and Discipline traditional model to one that enables people to learn how to learn and to keep learning, putting on the mind and heart of Christ, or his SENSIBILITAS.

From table and group discussions: a good formation of formators course, the Chemchemi 9 month course in Nairobi. The Christian Brothers have taken the radical step of psychologically testing their formators, and then sending them to courses at the Institute of Religious Formation, St Louis, USA, or to two centres in Ireland, one of them being Loreto House. The Philippines: the East Asia Pastoral Institute; the Emmaus program; etc.
